Lord Hornblower

by CS Forester

Historical Fiction

Barely recovered from the typhus he contracted in Russia, Commodore Sir Horatio Hornblower is charged with bringing in a mutinying crew who are threatening to go over to Bonaparte's side.    Given carte blanche, Hornblower takes the difficult situation and turns it in to a series of triumphs, culminating in the taking of Le Havre for the allies and his rise to the peerage.     When Bonaparte is removed from France, Hornblower rejoins his old friend le Comte de Gracay -- and his daughter-in-law Marie.    But Bonaparte returns and Hornblower finds himself leading a rag-tag band of guerilla fighters.     Leading them in to the enemy's hands.

Another novel set largely on land, with only the early part of the story detailing Hornblower's successes against the French while he attempts to deal with the mutiny.      Though still full of historical detail and Hornblower's introspection, I did find this novel a little too slow in places; not the best of the series.
